Warning! Your sump pump will eventually fail, if you don't have a back-
There are four important factors that need to be met so that you can have a dry healthy basement:
1)Clean gutters with downspouts that divert the water away from the house. If your gutters are full of debris or your downspouts just dump the water at the foundation wall all the water coming off your roof will put tremendous hydrostatic pressure on your foundations walls. This pressure will force the water through the foundation and into your basement!
2) Cracks in the foundation wall must be repaired. Cracks in the foundation wall offer no resistance to rising hydrostatic pressure building up against the foundation walls during a storm.
3) Proper grade pitch around the exterior of the home. The more surface run off during a storm that flows towards your home the more hydrostatic pressure pushing against the foundation.
4) A operating sump pump! Sump pits and drain tile allow the water that is pushing against the foundation wall to drain away reducing the hydrostatic pressure. If a sump pump fails or the power goes out water will continue to rise in the sump eventually overflowing into your basement! Thats where a battery back up sump pump comes into the picture. Not only will they protect you if the power goes out but also if your main sump pump fails (this will happen at some point). There are many types of systems available.
